WTF to do about AI Think & Do Club

**Register by Thursday, June 25th and we'll work with you to schedule our meetings for times you can definitely make!**
MAKE EQUITY CENTERED DECISIONS ABOUT AI
For the last year and a half I've been paying attention to AI from an arms length, promising myself that "I'll get to it" at some point. “It” being how to think about it, whether or not it can be equitable, and maybe how to use it well. The media I’ve consumed basically aligns with my instincts - it's bad for kids, its bad for adults, it's bad for the economy, it's bad for the environment, it's really bad for anyone who our society already treats like trash . . . but I also hear from folks I really respect and with whom I share fundamental beliefs about how they are using it, how its helpful, sometimes even how they are excited and hopeful about it?!
Some questions I’ve considered are:
- Should I be learning how to use an LLM and if so which one? Or am I actually cutting down a tree with every search?
- Should I be opting out of facial recognition at the airport and un-googling my life, or is that just going to make my own life more difficult for no reason?
- Is the data center issue more like the placement of power plants or a NIMBY issue?
- How do I think about AI and my kids? Their school work?!?
- Do I use it in the process of researching and writing the EMD book or do I want to make sure AI never gets a hold of my IP?
- Can an AI agent help you do the 7 problems with problems and save your team a massive amount of time or is that robbing your team of an experience that is worth the investment?
Basically . . . WTF should we do about AI?
So [drumroll] 🥁🥁🥁…
... we're officially getting to it. Want to get to it with us? We don't have the answers, but we know how we want to get them - these kinds of complex issues are precisely the kind that the equityXdesign process is positioned to help us wade through.
A Think and Do Club for Individuals:
⭐Join us and consume all the content and engage in discussion and come to your own personal AI stance.
⭐Or, Join us and hear how others are thinking about the content and coming to their stances.
⭐Or, Join us and wait for the official EMD stance that we'll publish at the end of the cohort to then adjust it and make it your own.
Engage as much or as little as makes sense for you!
How we'll roll:
The Think . . .
- Weekly curated short form content delivered via email - articles, videos, podcast, research summaries, reports, etc
- Bi-weekly facilitated cohort space to dig into content, for reflection, collective meaning-making, and time to craft our personal stances
- Monthly Book Club Meeting - We'll pick a book a month, so 5 total (Reading list being finalized but basically considering these)
The Do . . .
- Monthly AI practice space with support to help you practice using AI in the ways you think you might want to, equitably and practically
- Monthly AI resistance space with support to help you take action resisting Big Tech in the ways you think you might want to, equitably and practically
Club will run July 15 to December 15. Registration will close August 15.

These offerings will be led by Dr. Christine Ortiz (the AI skeptic) and Alex Patino (the AI expert).
We're excited to partner with Alex, who has deep expertise that we don't when it comes to AI. A fellow MIT alum, Alex began his career in quantitative trading, research, data science, and machine learning, and has spent the years since using those tools to build products and help organizations make better decisions with data. He brings both a practical understanding of how AI works and a thoughtful perspective on how it should—and shouldn’t—be used.
