Competing Commitments

DO NOW: Complete your Competing Commitments.

You likely have a commitment that keeps you from feeling the fear and worry that you listed in the Worry Box which we can identify by turn our fears and worries into commitment statements.

Example: If our worry box says:I worry that when I speak up I'll sound stupid. I worry if I don't smile and agree I won't look like a team player. I worry that if I say no to work, I'll look like I'm not dependable. then the commitment statement might look like:

I am also committed to....

pretending like I know or understand something, even if I don't.

making sure I always look smart.

agreeing even if I don't mean it.

looking like the one that everyone can depend on.

The criteria below will assist you in ensuring you have strong competing commitments. Strong statements:

  1. Preserve the danger from the worry box,
  2. Are about commitments to self-protection, and are NOT noble,
  3. Show why column two behaviors make good sense,
  4. Are in tension with column one, and
  5. Helps make the map feel like a powerful illustration of what is happening for you.
